Tell us a bit about yourself.
“Hi, my name is Friso. I study Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology at Wageningen University & Research. I am passionate about exploring the intricate world of genetic modification and am excited to engage in cutting-edge research and innovation. This summer, I had the chance to study CRISPR-Cas based genome engineering methods in fungal strains at IFF’s facility in Palo Alto. This opportunity not only aligns with IFF’s summer internship program but also marks a significant milestone for me as it serves as the final requirement for my master’s degree program.”
Why did you apply for the Internships in the Valley program?
“Completing an internship is a mandatory component of my study program. Given the flexibility to pursue opportunities abroad, I was determined to relocate to the United States. The tech landscape of the US has always interested me, as many of the groundbreaking innovations originating there significantly shape research here in Europe. As I began contacting companies, I encountered challenges – many remained unresponsive, and others swiftly declined due to visa sponsorship concerns. It was during this search that I discovered the Internships in the Valley program, which offers valuable assistance in securing internships at select companies, effectively addressing the visa hurdle.”
Tell us a bit about your internship.
“I have just completed a four-month internship at IFF, International Flavors and Fragrances, as part of their summer internship program. Throughout my internship, I've primarily been stationed in the fungal biology lab, where I was entrusted with individual ownership of my project, empowering me to explore innovative solutions and strategies. I've been fortunate to have three supervisors, each bringing distinct areas of expertise to the table. Regular discussions and reviews with my supervisors have ensured that I remained on the right track and that my findings were critically assessed on an ongoing basis. Overall, this internship has not only deepened my technical knowledge but has also underscored the significance of continuous hands-on learning.”
What have you learned from your experience at IFF? Has this shaped which direction you want to go to after your master’s?
“In essence, my internship at IFF has equipped me with a comprehensive skill set that involves technical proficiency, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. My enthusiasm for research is unquestionable, yet I am well aware that the key to my next career move lies in identifying the optimal match. Whether that is a PhD or a job in industry I am unsure. ”
What are some pieces of advice you’d give future interns moving to the US?
“To begin with, approach the visa process with attention, and anticipate a certain degree of delay right from the outset. It's essential to establish clear communication channels with your company, the Internships in the Valley program, and the NAF throughout each phase of the procedure.
Secondly, prices and cost of living here in San Francisco are extremely high, so you definitely need a set salary. Moreover, having a car is advisable as the Caltrain might not be the most optimal commuting option.
And finally, you should start looking for housing very early. Additionally, bear in mind that you'll be required to make numerous upfront payments, such as deposits, first-month rent, and car rentals.”
