Finding a Room

Living in the Bay Area feels like a dream. Finding your dream place, however, can be tricky. What should you look out for, and how can you find the best deal?

We are here to help you navigate the complicated maze of finding a room in the Bay Area.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do expect roommates.

Because of the expensive prices, living with roommates is like breathing air in the San Francisco area. It just has to be done. So unless you are a millionaire by chance, prepare to cohabitate and make some new friends!

Do search broadly.

Make sure to spread out and react to multiple listings instead of focusing your sights on just one website or a single advert. Perseverance and flexibility are key.

Do check out your neighborhood.

The Bay Area might be known for its tech and innovation, but unfortunately also for its homelessness problem. Make sure to adequately research the area of your new place beforehand, as there are some sketchier neighborhoods out there.

Do Skype!

Before accepting any place, make sure you Skype with your roommate(s)/landlord. Getting a feel for the people you will be dealing with prevents uncomfortable situations and scams!

Don’t expect a cheap deal.

As a student, I’m sure finding the best and cheapest deals is what you do. Silicon Valley, however, is known for its steep living costs, and rent is unfortunately no exception. Expect monthly prices ranging from $900 - $1600 for a single room in a shared place.

Don’t wire any money before your arrival!

Like any big city, San Francisco and its surrounding areas are known for their housing scams. It is therefore of paramount importance to never wire any money to your landlord before you’ve actually seen the place with your own eyes. Be smart about it!

Don’t panic!

In the worst-case scenario, you can always book a hostel for a few weeks and resume your search on arrival. Searching locally is the best way to find a place after all.

Monthly Costs

As an intern with Internships in the Valley, you will be compensated a minimum of $2500 per month by your host company. As a student from the Netherlands, this might sound fantastic.

However, there is no escaping the steep prices of the Bay Area. Be prepared to spend between $2500 to $3000 a month. Exactly how expensive your time abroad will depend on personal choices of course.

An expected monthly cost breakdown:

Rent $1350

Food & toiletries $450

Public transit $100

Telephone $50

Cab Rides $100

Gym membership $100

Eating & going out $250

Tourist activities/local trips $600

Total: $3000*

*To give a realistic monthly average, personal insurance, visa & plane ticket costs are excluded from this budget.
